Philip H. McCrea St. Charles, Iowa\nPhilip McCrea passed away at age one hundred on August 31st at Good Samaritan in Indianola, where he had been a resident since 2016. He spent ninety- five years of his life on the farm where he was born July 4, 1918 near St. Charles.\nPhilip served in the Army during World War Two, from 1941-1945 and was with the 27th Division, 104th Field Artillery during the campaign in the Pacific. He returned home and married Catherine Wiedmann in 1947. He was preceded in death by his parents, Horace and Gladys, his sister Ruth, his wife Catherine and daughter Linda.\nPhilip is survived by his daughters, Marcia of St. Charles, and Jeanne (Randy) of Port Townsend, WA., and sons William (Mary Jane) of Port Orchard, WA., and James (Yvonne) of Stratford, Connecticut. He was also blessed with and survived by four grandsons and five granddaughters. Grandsons, James (Amy) of Glendale, AZ, Christopher of Salt Lake City, UT, Steven Thrall of Fort Worth TX, and Neil Miller (Tiffany) of Gibralter MI. Granddaughters, Elyssa McCrea of Orlando FL., Pearl McCrea-Welle of Seattle WA., Lilly McCrea-Welle of Bellingham WA. and Alena McCrea of Port Orchard, WA.,and Olivia Miller of Gibralter, MI., as well as two nieces and a nephew.\nPhilip was well known for his music, which was one of his greatest joys. He played with various musicians for dances and community events throughout Warren County for several decades, and went on to be one of the best fiddlers in the state. He played in his last fiddle contest at the State Fair in 2015, at age 97, after participating for the first time at age fifty. The friends that he played with over all of those years were a major part of his and Catherine's lives. They showed their respect by attending a grand birthday party on the 4th of July to celebrate this milestone.\nVisitation will be held at Peterson's Funeral Home in Indianola on Tuesday, September 4th at 9:00 am with the funeral service at 10:00 am. Interment will be held directly after the service at the St. Charles Cemetery. .
