Penny Kay Scharff, 70, of Indianola, passed away peacefully on September 6, 2022, at Westview Care Center. A memorial service for Penny will be held at 6:30pm on September 19, 2022, at the Martensdale Community Church. There will be a reception with light refreshments following the service.Penny was born February 20, 1952, in Ft. Dodge, Iowa to Verlin and Bonita (Andrews) Hall. She was the oldest of four children and grew up on a farm in Lehigh, Iowa. Penny married Ed Scharff, and they raised two daughters on acreage in St. Marys, Iowa, with many cats and Saint Bernard's. Penny was a dedicated student, graduating from Grandview College in 1990 with a 4.0 GPA in Human Services. She was very proud of her time working with children at YESS (Youth Emergency Services and Shelter) as well as coordinating events for Radisson Hotel and Drake University Law. She loved all kinds of music, reading, creating artwork, decorating cakes, and enjoyed any good Hallmark movie. Penny was a humorous and compassionate woman who was always there to listen without judging or lecturing. She was strong and independent, fighting hard until the end.Penny is survived by her mother, Bonita Gazaway of Jenks, OK; daughters, Angela Scharff of Indianola, IA and Colleen (Matt) Krogman of St. Marys, IA; brother, Rick Hall of Boone, IA; sister, Julie (Tim) Thompson of Jenks, OK; grandchildren, Cody Willey, Macie Krogman, and Malena Krogman; and her great-grandchildren, Keyton Willey and a baby girl due in January.Penny was preceded in death by her father Verlin, brother Garry, and a sister-in-law, Joy Hall. Penny's daughters would like to extend their deepest appreciation to Westview Care Center and Suncrest Hospice for the amazing care their mother received.In lieu of flowers, donations in Penny's name can be made to Sheepgate (A division of Adult and Teen Challenge of the Midlands).
