Katie Hakes Obituary Kathlyn M. (Katie) Hakes, age 98, passed away on July 06, 2025, at Wesley Village in Indianola, Iowa. She was born on August 19, 1926, to Harry and Clara Saunders at the family farm in Manilla, Iowa. After being raised on the farm, she graduated from Drake University. She was married at the farm on Thanksgiving Day, 1949 to Dr. H. Doane Hakes. They settled in Carlisle, Iowa where Doane began his medical practice and Katie began her career as wife, mother, homemaker, and part time medical receptionist and insurance processor. Together they raised 3 children, Lee, Tom, and Lori. Following Doane’s death in 1981, her focus turned to a new role as grandmother and loyal and supportive friend and neighbor. She moved from the family home in Carlisle to Wesley Village in Indianola in 2007, where she enjoyed new friends and several bridge clubs. She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, and her two brothers and their wives. Survivors include her three children and their families: Lee Ellen and Ron Wyckoff of Carlisle (grandchildren Brandon Wyckoff, Blake Wyckoff (Alexis and Adyn), Jill and Brandon Batten (Tanner, Maggie, Gemma, and Penny)). Tom and AdriAnne Hakes of Keokuk, Iowa (grandchildren Kevin and Heather Hakes (Ellen, Julia, Mary Clare, and Jane), Sally and Cole Ferguson (Jase and Faye)). Lori and Larry Hutchison of Austin, Texas (grandchildren Beth and Andy Deck (Ella), Kathryn Hutchison and David Giesberg (Ben and Hanna)). 3 children, 7 grandchildren, and 15 great-grandchildren altogether. Several nieces and nephews also survive. There will be a private family graveside service and burial at the Hartford, Iowa cemetery.
