Julie Shepard-Smuck

Julie Shepard-Smuck, of Pleasant Hill, Iowa, born on June 23, 1965, in Des Moines, Iowa, peacefully passed away at home, surrounded by family, on April 7, 2026. Julie grew up in West Des Moines, Iowa, and was a graduate of Dowling Catholic High School.

Julie’s life was a testament to her strength and perseverance, exemplified by her proud accomplishment of completing the Chicago Marathon. This milestone reflected her determination and resilience. Her love of staying active went far beyond personal achievements; she found her greatest joy in simple adventures, especially those spent exploring the outdoors with her beloved dogs.

Julie cherished the holidays, finding great joy in decorating, gathering with loved ones, and creating traditions that will be remembered for years to come. She enjoyed music and seemed to know the words to every song, often singing along with joy. Her boisterous, infectious laugh could light up any room and never failed to bring a smile to those around her.

Julie’s love for her family was the center of her life. She showed up for them in every way she could, offering unwavering support, care, and presence. As a wife to Gary Smuck, they built a life full of love and shared memories. As an aunt, bonus mother, and grandmother, she was truly exceptional—her warmth, devotion, and gentle spirit made her deeply cherished, and she will be forever remembered.

Julie is survived by her husband, Gary Smuck, of Pleasant Hill, Iowa; bonus daughter, Katie Smuck, of Pleasant Hill, Iowa; bonus sons, Derek Brownell of Des Moines, Iowa, and Sam Smuck of Des Moines, Iowa; grandchildren, Jonah, Kingston, Cora, Oliver, and Xurri; sisters, Kathleen (Joe) Fazio of Norwalk, Iowa, and Jenifer (Scott) Kollings of Lake Oswego, Oregon; brothers, Stephen Shepard of Des Moines, Iowa; Thomas (Vicki) Shepard of Lake Bonney, Washington; Michael (Susan) Shepard of Rochester, Minnesota; Jeffry (Jenny) Shepard of Stuart, Iowa; and Patrick (Diana) Shepard of West Des Moines, Iowa; as well as 21 nieces and nephews and 24 great-nieces and great-nephews.
