Evelyn Lewin

Evelyn Elaine Lewin of Indianola, was born on December 14, 1935, in Alden, Iowa, and was called home on May 8, 2025, at Regency Care Center in Norwalk, IA. A loving, creative, supportive, and reliable woman, Evelyn was an unforgettable figure in the lives of her family and friends.

Evelyn spent her professional life in the food services sector. She worked at several places such as Scotty's, King's Food Host, then finally retiring from McDonald's. She was a do-it-yourselfer and was known for her skills in remodeling rental houses, building decks, gardening, helping family and friends with roofing, building sheds, painting, and much more. Her baking skills were legendary among the Downey Tire crew, and her comforters were cherished items among those lucky enough to receive them. An active member of the American Legion Auxiliary in Moulton, Evelyn also offered her culinary talents by helping with the cooking and serving at the Legion's stand during the Jamboree.

Evelyn was a proud member of the Moulton-Udell Eaglets' girls 6 on 6 basketball team, who won the Sectional Championship in 1953. She was also honored as a Neighbor of the Week in 1991 by the Des Moines Register while living in Carlisle. She was quoted "I owe my success to my family, people I've worked with, and good friends and neighbors".

She is survived by her daughters, Sheryl (Richard) Ledlie of Des Moines and Susan Wright of Norwalk. Grandchildren Doug Ledlie of Ackworth, Melissa (John) Kocur of Carlisle, Christopher (Katie) Wright of Florida and Lindsie (Tony) Hayes of Ankeny. Great-grandchildren Austin Ledlie, Kaci Ledlie, Kate Ness, Abby Ness and John Hayes. Brother Harold (Elaine) Howard of Des Moines, brothers-in-law Colin Ballanger of Coatsville, MO, and Dean Lewin of Bussey, and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband Floyd Lewin, parents La Verne and Mona Howard, siblings Dennis Howard and Janie Ballanger and son-in-law Randy Wright.

A visitation in memory of Evelyn will be held on Monday, May 12, 2025, from 5:00 -7:00 pm CDT at Peterson Funeral Home, 415 School Street, Carlisle, Iowa, 50047. Interment will take place at 10:00 AM, Tuesday, May 13, 2025 in the Sunset View Cemetery in Moulton, Iowa. We encourage friends and family members to share their memories of Evelyn and upload photos to her memorial page to celebrate her life.
