Ernest Earl Johnson, 82, passed away at Iowa Veterans Home in Marshalltown, IA, on Friday, March 11, 2011. Visitation with family will be held Tuesday, March 15 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Peterson's Funeral Home in Indianola, IA. Private burial will take place at Harper Cemetery in Redfield, IA, at 10 a.m. on Wednesday March 16. \n\nErnie was preceded in death by his parents, a brother Harold and sisters Louise Spence, Irene Johnson, Shirley Johnson and Eudora Hommer. He is survived by former wife, Zelda; Two brothers, Larry and Victor Johnson, son, Earl (Debbie) Johnson of Indianola; daughter, Barb (Duane) Downey of Indianola; and daughter, Carolyn (David) Caskey of Milo; eight grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.\nErnest was born in Menlo, Iowa to Earl Johnson and Mabel Putney on March 30, 1928. In 1947 Ernie married Zelda Burnham and moved to Warren County Iowa. Together they raised their three children; Earl, Barbara and Carolyn. Ernest was a self employed mechanic and heavy equipment operator in Warren County and a Seaman 1st class in the United States Navy which he was honorably discharged in May of 1946. Ernie again answered his nations call to duty on August 2, 1950 to serve his country in the Korean Conflict. He was honorably discharged a second time in July of 1954.
